Perusa acquires décor and abrasive paper divisions from Ahlstrom
Perusa has bought the pre-impregnated décor papers and abrasive paper backings subsidiaries from fibre-based materials company Ahlstrom for €20m.
The management of the abrasive paper divisions took part in the acquisition, which is thought to be completed in the first quarter of 2014.
Perusa provided equity for the transaction via its Perusa Partners Fund 2 vehicle, a €207m buyout fund closed in November 2011.
Ahlstrom put the two divisions up for sale after the European Commission named the sale as a condition for the approval of the merger of Swedish speciality paper manufacturer Munksjö and Ahlstrom's label and processing business.
The buyout is the fourth investment Perusa has made from this vehicle. In September this year, the Munich-based GP bought Schuberth Holding, a helmet manufacturer. One year prior to this, Perusa acquired energy and environmental technology group SEM AB for SEK 218m. In its maiden investment from Perusa Partners Fund 2, Perusa bought TLT Automotive Solutions, an automotive logistics business, in July 2012.
Finnish business Ahlstrom has been listed on the NASDAQ OMX Helsinki since 2006. The firm continues to produce wallpaper, hybrid wallcover and poster paper materials in Osnabrück.
Company
The pre-impregnated décor and abrasive paper backings divisions are based in Osnabrück, Germany. Both divisions will share a manufacturing plant with Ahlstrom's wallpaper division.
As part of the transaction, Perusa and Ahlstrom created a joint venture to operate the power plant and the water facilities for the site.
The plant was opened in 1976 by German firm Kämmerer, before being fully acquired by Ahlstrom in 1979.
