Bridgepoint invests in Burger King France
Bridgepoint has bought a significant minority stake in the French franchise of Burger King from Groupe Bertrand, which has retained a majority.
Previous minority investor, Canadian corporate Restaurant Brands International, has retained a very small minority, Unquote understands.
In a statement the GP said it is currently investing via Bridgepoint Europe V, closed on €4bn in 2015. The vehicle typically invests in businesses with enterprise value of €200m-€1bn. The fund is almost fully deployed, Unquote understands. Bridgepoint held a final close for Bridgepoint Europe VI on €5.5bn in December 2017.
Casual dining is a well–known sector to the GP. In May, Bridgepoint sold UK-headquartered coffee and sandwich shop chain Pret A Manger to JAB Holding in a deal reportedly valued at more than £1.5bn, generating a 6x return for the GP.
The Burger King master franchise was granted to Groupe Bertrand in 2013 by Restaurant Brands International, a Canadian multinational fast food holding company, which retained a minority stake.
At the time, Groupe Bertrand was granted the exclusive right to roll-out new stores across the country.
In 2015, Groupe Bertrand also acquired Groupe Quick, a long-standing quick-service restaurant operator, and embarked on a programme of converting Quick outlets to Burger King restaurants. By the end of 2018, Burger King plans to operate 450 sites, of which 300 will operate under its brand.
Groupe Bertrand, founded in 1997 and owned by Olivier Bertrand, is a commercial catering business.
Operating 1,000 restaurants in France and internationally, through a brand portfolio including Burger King, Quick, Hippopotamus, Au Bureau, Angelina, Brasserie Lipp and Au Pied de Cochon, Groupe Bertrand forecasts brand sales of €1.9bn in 2018.

In 2015, Groupe Bertrand also acquired Groupe Quick, and embarked on a programme of converting Quick outlets to Burger King restaurants. By the end of 2018, Burger King will operate 450 sites, of which 300 will carry its brand.
