Carlyle's Saverglass carves out MD Verre from Vidrala
Carlyle-backed Saverglass, a French producer of glass bottles, has carved out Belgium-based MD Verre from Madrid-listed glass specialist Vidrala.
MD Verre was purchased for the symbolic price of €1. Following the acquisition, Saverglass intends to invest €50m over the next three years to finance the transition of MD Verre's Ghlin factory towards Saverglass's high-end wine bottle production.
Feuquières-based Saverglass specialises in the design, manufacturing and decoration of high-end glass bottles and decanters for wine and spirits. It employs 3,400 staff across 22 locations worldwide and generated revenues of $514m in 2018.
Carlyle acquired a stake of around 80% in the company from Astorg Partners via its €3.75bn Carlyle Europe Partners IV in December 2015.
Under Carlyle's ownership, Saverglass has increased its revenues, further expanded across the American market and opened a new plant in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Company
MD Verre is a subsidiary of Spanish glass producer Vidrala. It produces 160,000 tonnes of glass per year, mainly wine bottles, and employs 250 staff in its factory located in Ghlin.
