SoftBank has led a $500m series-E funding round for French content optimisation platform Contentsquare via SoftBank Vision Fund 2.

Most of the existing investors, which include Eurazeo Growth, BPI France, KKR, Canaan Partners, Highland Europe, and BlackRock, took part in this round.

The latest funding brings Contentsquare's total funding to date to $810m and values it at $2.8bn.

In addition to the investment, the company will benefit from SoftBank's expertise in scaling companies and network in Asia. As part of the deal, Michel Combes, president of SoftBank Group International, will join Contentsquare's board of directors.

The company will use the proceeds to further develop its platform, advance AI innovation, and to speed up its growth and geographical expansion.

The company said in a statement that it had grown its annual recurring revenues at a rate of 121% over the past four years,  carried out two additional strategic acquisitions and expanded geographically. It currently employs 800 staff across the US, the UK, Germany, Israel, Singapore, Japan and Australia, and plans to create more than 1,500 new jobs over the next three years.

Previous funding
In 2012, Seed4Soft invested €400,000 in a series-A round for ContentSquare.

Highland Europe and Seed4Soft invested $20m in the company in 2016.

US-based Canaan led a $42m series-B in January 2018, alongside Highland Europe and new investor Eurazeo.

In January 2019, Eurazeo led a $60m series-C funding round, alongside Highland Europe, Canaan and H14.

In May 2020, ContentSquare raised $190m in a series-D funding round led by BlackRock, with BPI France, Eurazeo, Canaan, Hermes GPE, Highland Europe, H14 and KKR also taking part. Sapiance Capital provided credit to the company.

Company
Founded in 2012 and co-headquartered in New York and Paris, Contentsquare's platform analyses customer behavior through web, mobile and app interactions, and turns this data into recommendations for clients to increase user conversion, revenues, engagement and growth.

It counts brands such as BMW, Gucci, Ikea, Microsoft, Rakuten, Sephora, The NorthFace and Verizon among its customers, and employs 800 staff.

People
Contentsquare – Jonathan Cherki (CEO, founder).
SoftBank Investment Advisers – Yanni Pipilis (managing partner).
