BMW I Ventures leads $15m round for Mapillary
Corporate VC investor BMW I Ventures has led a $15m funding round for Swedish street-level imagery mapping platform Mapillary, alongside returning VC backers.
The round was led by BMW I Ventures, with participation from Samsung Catalyst Fund and NavInfo, alongside previous investors Atomico, Sequoia Capital, PlayFair and LDV Capital.
With the fresh funding, Mapillary intends to accelerate the development of an independent mapping data system for autonomous vehicles and apply the technology to autonomous driving functions. Its data is used by customers including the Volkswagen Group, mapping service Here, and The Red Cross.
Previous funding
Sequoia led a $1.5m seed round for Mapillary, alongside London-based PlayFair, Wellington Partners and LDV in January 2015. In addition to the VC backers, a number of business angels also participated in the funding round, which was earmarked to help grow Mapillary's team, services and community tools.
A syndicate of investors comprising Atomico, Sequoia, LDV, PlayFair and Wellington jointly provided $8m in venture funding in March 2016. The funding round was led by Atomico.
Company
Established in 2013 and headquartered in Malmö, Sweden, Mapillary has developed a platform that enables users to take photos or videos tracking their routes while walking, biking and driving before uploading them to be mapped. It works with companies in the mapping, automotive and urban development sectors as well as NGOs. The company also operates an R&D facility in Graz, Austria.
