SmartFin Capital leads $25m series-C for MariaDB
Finnish database software firm MariaDB Corporation has raised $25m in an additional series-C round led byТ SmartFin Capital.
Existing investors and new investor GP Bullhound also joined the round. The funding brings the total amount raised by the company to more than $125m.
The company will use the proceeds to scale its operations for its database-as-a-service product SkySQL and to more quickly support the growing demand for cloud databases.
MariaDB was co-created by the developer of MySQL, which was later acquired by rival Oracle.
Previous funding
In 2012, MariaDB raised $4m in a series-A round from OnCorps, a peer-based community of veteran tech investors, Tesi, Spintop Ventures and Open Ocean Capital. It later raised an additional $2.5m in series-A funding from California Technology Ventures.
In 2013, it secured $20m in series-B investment from existing investors Intel Capital, California Technology Ventures, Tesi, Open Ocean Capital and Spintop Private Partners.
In 2016, the company raised $9m from Intel Capital and California Technology Ventures.
In 2017, MariaDB raised $27m in a series-C round led by China-based Alibaba Group alongside existing investors Intel Capital, California Technology Ventures, Tesi, SmartFin Capital and Open Ocean. The same year, it received an investment of $27m from the European Investment Bank (EIB).
Company
Founded in 2009 in Espoo by the developers of MySQL, MariaDB is an open-source relational database which turns data into structured information for a wide array of applications, ranging from banking to websites. It counts Deutsche Bank, DBS Bank, Nasdaq, Red Hat, ServiceNow, Verizon and Walgreens among its customers. According to its website, it employs 200 staff.
