
Intel Capital, CTV invest $9m in MariaDB
Intel Capital and California Technology Ventures have invested $9m in Finnish SQL developer MariaDB, adding to their existing investment in the company.
The latest funding round brings the total venture capital raised by MariaDB to around $40m. The company expects to raise an additional, larger round later this year.
MariaDB will use the cash to support marketing, the development and launch of new products and to move some operations to the US from Finland. The company also appointed founder and MySQL creator Michael Widenius as CTO.
Previous funding
MariaDB has raised around $40m between September 2010 and January 2016, with the largest round being a $20m series-B led by Intel Capital, California Technology Ventures, Finnish Industry Investment, Open Ocean and Spintop Ventures.
Runa Capital is also a backer of MariaDB, having invested €3m in February 2015.
Company
MariaDB is an Espoo-based developer of products for businesses based on the SQL programming language.
Founded by the creator of MySQL, Michael Widenius, the company is managed by the MariaDB foundation, which Widenius also founded.
