Atomico, Index, IVP in $130m Supercell funding round
Atomico, Index Ventures and Institutional Venture Partners (IVP) have invested in a $130m funding round for Finnish mobile games developer Supercell.
The $130m investment from Atomico, Index and IVP valued Supercell at $770m. Atomico invested more than $25m in the round, alongside Index, which is believed to have invested $52.5m, leaving an equal amount ($52.5m) with IVP.
However, Supercell did not need to raise cash given the healthy state of its balance sheet, Index Ventures explained in a blog post which outlines the investors' motivation to invest in the business, so the VCs proposed a deal under which they bought shares directly from shareholders.
Supercell will expand its business in Asian markets following the investment, as the company has already seen considerable success in China and Japan despite its games being in English.
The business also received a $12m financing from Accel Partners, London Venture Partners and Klaas Kersting in 2011 and previous funding from London Venture Partners, Initial Capital, Cerval Investments and Lifeline Ventures.
Company
Supercell is a mobile, tablet first, games developer based in Helsinki and San Francisco. The company grew rapidly since its inception in 2010 and currently generates $2.4m per day from its two hit games Hay Day and Clash of Clans, which are played by 8.5 million people.
Last year the company had a turnover of $100m and in the first quarter of this year it has already generated $179m, with a profit of $104m, leading analysts to predict that Supercell could reach sales of $1bn by the end of 2013.
The games are currently only available on iOS and the company predicts significant growth potential in developing its games for android systems in the future. Supercell employs 100 people.
