Moor backs Volumental with $3m investment
Stockholm-based Moor Capital and Silicon Valley’s Founder.org have completed a $3m series-A round for Swedish 3D modelling company Volumental.
Mikael Moreira, an investment manager at Moor (which is the investment firm of Rovio chairman Kaj Hed), said the VC sees a substantial market for Volumental's product, a 3D scanning web application that creates printable 3D models.
Previous funding
Before the funding round by Moor and Founders.org, Volumental had raised $27,362 on Kickstarter, exceeding its $20,000 goal.
Company
Volumental began as a research project at Stockholm's Royal Institute of Technology, based on Microsoft's Kinect cameras.
The business focuses on 3D customisation through the use of 3D-enabled cameras, where Volumental's software creates accurate scans of the human body. The resulting 3D models can then be used to create custom-fitting products and models.
One application already underway is custom-fitting children's footware, which the business is exploring though a newly announced partnership with American children's shoe maker Plae.
Founded in 2012, the 16-employee company is also working on a joint project with Intel.
People
Caroline Walerud is the CEO and co-founder of Volumental. Mikael Moreira is an investment manager at Moor, while Michael Baum is the founder and CEO of Founder.org.
