Point72 leads $60m series-C for translation platform Unbabel
Point72 Ventures has led a $60m series-C funding round for Lisbon-based translation software company Unbabel.
Microsoft's M12, Samsung Next, Greycroft, Scale Venture Partners, Notion Capital, Caixa Capital, Faber Ventures, FundersClub, Structure Capital, Indico Capital Partners, and EVentures also took part in the round.
Unbabel plans to use the financing to consolidate its presence in Europe and the US, and boost its expansion in Asia.
Previous funding
In January 2014, Unbabel received $120,000 in seed funding from accelerator Y Combinator and Fundersclub. This was supplemented with an extra $1.5m from angel investors later in the year.
A syndicate of Workday Ventures, Investo and Caixa Capital invested a further $1.5m in seed funding in May 2015.
Subsequently, Shilling Capital Partners along with Notion, Caixa and Faber, led a $5m series-A round for the company in October 2016.
A consortium of VC firms and corporate venture investors backed a $23m series-B round for the company in January 2018. The group of investors included Scale Venture Partners, Notion, Microsoft Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, Samsung Next and Funders Club.
Company
Established in 2013 in Lisbon, Unbabel offers a proprietary technology platform that combines natural language processing, neural machine translation, quality estimation algorithms and a global network of 55,000 translators to enable translation of content. It has dedicated integrations for Salesforce, Zendesk, WordPress, Mailchimp and other platforms.
The company is headquartered in Lisbon, with additional offices located in New York, San Francisco and Pittsburgh. It employs 200 staff and its client base includes Microsoft, Facebook, Booking.com and EasyJet.
