Regulatory hurdle for Electra's Original Bowling add-on
Electra Partners-owned bowling business The Original Bowling Company’s acquisition of competitor Bowlplex may be in jeopardy after concerns were raised by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
Electra originally acquired Original Bowling for £91m in September last year, and revealed Bowlplex as its first add-on acquisition earlier this year.
According to a statement released by the CMA, the private equity house and Original Bowling have until Friday 21 August to present a "clear-cut remedy" to the perceived competition issues. Failing this, the deal, which was announced in April, will be referred to an in-depth investigation.
The point of contention is six local areas identified by the CMA where Original Bowling and Bowlplex both operate ten-pin bowling facilities: Bristol, Bracknell, Cardiff, Dudley, Leeds/Castleford and Glasgow. The regulator believes insufficient competition may arise from the merger, thus negatively impacting consumers.
