Uniplaces raises $24m from Atomico et al.
Uniplaces, an online accommodation rental platform for students, has raised a $24m series-A round led by Atomico.
Other investors in the round include existing backers Octopus Investments and Portuguese angel fund Shilling Capital Partners. The company, which was founded in Lisbon but is now headquartered in London, also attracted several business angels for its series-A.
Octopus injected £2.2m into Uniplaces around a year ago. The company planned to use the fresh funding to expand into new student cities internationally, including in France, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy. It also planned to launch in Birmingham and Manchester later that year.
Octopus was joined in the 2014 round by angel investors Alex Chesterman, the founder of Zoopla Property Group and LoveFilm; Shilling Capital Partners; and Rob McClatchey, a former chairman of University Partnerships Program and managing director at Barclays Capital.
In November 2013, Octopus invested £700,000 in Uniplaces alongside angel investors Chesterman and Graze.com chairman William Reeve.
