Sponsored video: Secondcap's François Gamblin on the secondaries market
Secondcap CEO François Gamblin discusses current secondaries market trends with unquote's Greg Gille.
As secondaries activity hit record highs last year, Gamblin highlights the changes that took place within the market in the past decade: "The market has changed dramatically over the past 10 years – in terms of market size, but also in the number and quality of participants, whereas the market was initially driven by a couple of secondaries specialists."
Moving on to the current prospects for secondaries activity, Gamblin notes that after an "extremely busy" first half of 2012, current market trends are raising a question mark over whether this could be sustained for the rest of the year. "There is a potential risk that we come back to the 2007-2008 level, when the market significantly dropped due to the buyers' aversion to risk."
That said, Gamblin remains optimistic given the multitude of favourable drivers still at play in the market. "I expect to see significant growth in emerging countries, and especially in Asia, over the coming years," he adds. "The market is not there yet, but I think everything is in place for a significant market size over the next two to three years."
