Morgan Stanley hires former Calpers CIO Eliopoulos
Morgan Stanley has appointed Ted Eliopoulos as vice-chair of investment management and head of strategic partnerships.
His responsibilities include working closely with the investment and client teams across Morgan Stanley's businesses, in a bid to deepen partnerships with clients.
Based in New York, Eliopoulos will also act as an adviser to the group's chief investment officers and will report to Dan Simkowitz, head of investment management.
He also joins the operating committee and and will co-chair Morgan Stanley Investment Management's sustainable investing council, along with sitting on investment committees across the business.
Prior to Morgan Stanley, Eliopoulos was CIO of California Public Employees Retirement System (Calpers). The $356bn pension fund had invested around 7.7% of its portfolio to private equity as of July 2018. Some of the recent commitments include Permira Growth Opportunities I, Vista Equity Partners Fund VII and Carlyle Europe Partners V.
Eliopoulos resigned from the pension fund in May, as he wanted to relocate to New York to be closer to his family. However, he was expected to remain at Calpers until the end of 2018.
Calpers has appointed Yu Ben Meng as a replacement for Eliopoulos. He joined from the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (Safe), the Chinese foreign exchange regulatory agency that functions as a bureau under the People's Republic of China, where he served as deputy chief investment officer.
