According to a note from the Spanish regulator CNMV, DLJ South American Partners has acquired a 25% stake in education publishing house Santillana from its parent media group Prisa, in a deal that values the company at around EUR 1bn.
Prisa operates a Spanish and Portuguese-language print media business focusing on the fields of education, information and entertainment. The company has a presence in 22 countries, reaching 43 million users through its global brands El Pais, 40 Principales, Santillana and Alfaguara.
A month ago New York-based investor Talos Partners invested $56m into media group Prisa, acquiring up to 10 million shares - representing a 4.5% stake in the company - and a warrant for up to 1 million shares at EUR 6 strike price. The investment in Grupo Prisa is Talos' first in a traditional media company.
DLJ focuses in South America in particular Brazil, Argentina and Chile and is co-headed by Marcelo Medeiros, Carlos García (formerly of Brazilian institution Banco Garantía) and Donaldson Lufkin.
