Rising in the east
March saw three large international firms open new offices in eastern Europe. Both Clifford Chance and Morgan Stanley are to open in Kiev while White & Case has just settled down in Bucharest. The latter has been active in Romania, especially in private equity, for a few years without a formal physical presence there, working with a number of local law firms. These companies are starting with small teams but plan to strengthen them rapidly. Both law firms have been present in Central Europe and Russia since the early 1990s. These moves confirm the industry's trend of expanding from Central Europe to the east.
