Cherry Ventures leads funding round for Wunder
Cherry Ventures, Blumberg Capital and Sixt Ventures have backed an eight-digit funding round for car-pooling application developer Wunder.
The funding will be used to expand into "mega-cities" in emerging markets where traffic and air pollution are particularly problematic. The company is already active in the Philippines, India and Malaysia and recently hired Uber's former marketing chief for India.
The company intends to generate revenue through advertising and partnerships with local businesses, as well as a transaction fee on rides over a certain length.
The application is currently banned in Germany but the company reports it has been in talks with manufacturers BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler about potential collaborations to build legitimacy.
Previous funding
Partech Ventures and Piton Capital, alongside angel investors, provided Wunder with seed funding in December 2013.
In June 2014, Christian Vollmann, TA Ventures, German Startups Group, TA Associates, Piton Capital and Partech Ventures invested in a funding round of undisclosed value.
In June 2015, Blumberg led a third round alongside iEurope Capital, Konstantin Sixt and Struck Capital.
Company
Founded in Hamburg in 2013, Wunder is a car-pooling mobile application, targeted specifically at commuters. It launched in Budapest, Warsaw and Prague in 2015, Manila in 2016, and Delhi, Kuala Lumpur, Cebu, Bangalore and Mumbai in 2017.
