Waterland-backed Atos bolts on MediaPark Klinik
Waterland Private Equity's buy-and-build platform Atos has acquired MediaPark Klinik, a Cologne-based hospital specialising in orthopaedics.
According to a statement, the acquisition will allow Atos to enhance its sports medicine expertise and become one of the largest regional providers of specialised orthopaedic surgery.
This is the fourth bolt-on made by the group, following the acquisitions of Munich-based Starmed, a 12-bed clinic bought in December 2016; Cologne-Junkersdorf-based Orthoparc, acquired in April 2017; and orthopaedic clinic Fleetinsel Klinik Hamburg, bought in September 2017. The group manages a total of 450 beds and employs a staff of around 500 people.
Previous funding
Waterland acquired Atos's former parent Median Kliniken from Advent International and Marcol Healthcare in October 2014, in a deal valued at around €1bn. It then sold the real estate and agreed to lease it back from Medical Properties Trust for €705m.
The GP then merged the company with its previous competitor RHM Group, which it had owned since May 2011, to create a new company that operated 72 clinics with 12,000 beds and 9,500 employees.
Atos was formed as a spinout from Median in August 2016. It was the start of a specialised buy-and-build strategy that saw three clinics break away from the main group with plans for further acquisitions. Two of these clinics already operated under the Atos name in Heidelberg and Munich, and the third was an orthopaedic clinic in Braunfels.
Company
MediaPark Klinik is a hospital located in Cologne that specialises in orthopaedics, with a focus on fields such as trauma surgery, sports medicine, osteopathy and chiropractic therapy. It has 65 beds and six operating rooms, and employs a staff of 40 people.
