IK exits Studienkreis in sale to edtech unicorn GoStudent
IK Partners is exiting Studienkreis, a German centre-based tutoring provider, in a sale to edtech company GoStudent.
Studienkreis will continue to operate independently under its current management team while synergies between the two businesses are identified, according to a press release.
IK Partners acquired Studienkreis from Aurelius for EUR 71.7m in November 2017 via IK Small Cap I fund, which closed in March 2016 on EUR 277m. Under IK Partners' ownership, Studienkreis acquired Austria-based education group LernQuadrat in 2018.
The addition of Studienkreis will allow GoStudent to serve families with a preference for centre-based learning or group classes, providing morning, afternoon and content education, according to the press release.
In March 2022, GoStudent's CEO and co-founder Felix Ohswald told sister publication Mergermarket that the business had acquisition targets lined up and expected to make two to five deals over the upcoming year.
GoStudent, which was valued at EUR 3bn in a Series D round in January, has made several acquisitions over the last 12 months including UK-based Seneca Learning, Spain-based Tus Media Group, and Austria-based Fox Education. Through these acquisitions, the company expanded into areas including AI-based learning content. Investors including Prosus and SoftBank Vision Fund 2, have invested more than EUR 590m in GoStudent.
Company
Germany-based Studienkreis was established in 1974 and has over 1,000 learning centres across the country. The business provides blended learning combining online solutions since 2012 with offline tutoring. The company, which serves 125,000 families every year in the DACH region, has developed its own proprietary digital tools.
