
Charles River Ventures backs ProtonMail
Charles River Ventures (CRV) has taken part in a $2m funding round for Geneva-based email security company ProtonMail.
The Fondation Genevoise pour l'Innovation Technologique (Fongit), a non-profit foundation and start-up incubator based in Geneva, also participated in the round. Fongit is backed by the State of Geneva and the Swiss Federal Commission for Technology and Innovation.
The company has earmarked the funds for the development of new features and to scale web-based infrastructure. The business will also move into new offices in Geneva and expand its data centres.
ProtonMail previously raised $550,000 in July 2014 from crowdfunding investors.
CRV is a US-based venture capital investor that focuses on series-A investments in consumer and enterprise technology companies. It has previously invested in Twitter, Yammer and Zendesk, among others.

Launched in May 2014, ProtonMail provides users with a secure email service to encrypt communications. The company claims to have 350,000 users, including business professionals, journalists and activists.

Andy Yen is co-founder of ProtonMail. Antonio Gambardella is director of Fongit.
