
Earlybird et al. invest €2m in Number26
Earlybird Venture Capital has led a €2m early-stage funding round for German banking app Number26 alongside Swiss investor Redalpine and the Axel Springer Plug and Play Accelerator.
The two VCs and the accelerator were joined in the round by several private investors specialising in financial services.
Earlybird recently made its maiden investments from its CEE-focused Earlybird Digital East Fund, which held a first close on $110m in January, committing capital to Romanian recruitment firm Tjobs and Turkish real estate listings platform Metrekare.
The firm is also understood to be nearing the final close for its €100m Europe-focused healthtech fund, as reported by unquote" earlier this month.
Company
Founded in February 2013 and headquartered in Berlin, Number26 is developing a mobile banking product for smartphones, namely a Mastercard-inclusive current account with no fees attached.
The account is accessible via smartphone and tracks spending in real time. Users receive a notification on their phone for every transaction to prevent fraud and are able to lock or unlock their card through one tap on the app.
Number26 is currently testing its product with selected users. The company employs 11 staff.

Number26 was founded by CEO Valentin Stalf and CFO Maximilian Tayenthal.
