Axa backs Medlanes
Axa Strategic Ventures has led an early-stage round for German digital health business Medlanes, alongside Rheingau Founders and business angels.
The funding round will allow Medlanes to build partnerships with insurance providers and introduce new offerings such as digitally prepared home visits. The startup also wants to expand to France and the UK in 2016.
The fresh capital injection comes after an adjustment of the company's business model. The initial concept saw doctors and patients communicate solely online. Because insurance companies would not cover this type of online-only service, Medlanes now plans to connect patients with doctors nearby for home visits after an online assessment and have a possible follow-on consultation after the visit conducted virtually as well.
Axa Strategic Ventures is a global €230m venture capital fund focused on startups in insurance and financial services, among other sectors. Its last deal in Europe was a €500,000 investment in French digital art and design producer Art2M in October 2015.
Previous funding
In July 2014, German Startups Group structured seed funding of an undisclosed amount for Medlanes. In August 2014, Rheingau invested €250,000 in the startup.
Company
Founded in 2013 and based in Berlin, Medlanes describes itself as a first contact point to healthcare that combines machine-learning technology with doctor knowledge. It enables patients to make their first contact to healthcare and arrange a home visit through its proprietary technology and a doctors network.
