Sofinnova leads €6m series-A for SafeHeal
Sofinnova Partners has led a €6m series-A funding round for SafeHeal, a French company that specialises in digestive surgery and has developed an endoluminal bypass sheath named Colovac.
The fresh capital will be used to execute the clinical and regulatory market access programme for Colovac, followed by a commercial launch of the device. SafeHeal has already begun a CE mark study, is currently recruiting patients for its first in-human clinical trial in France, and plans to extend it to hospitals in Germany, the UK and the US.
The VC firm is deploying capital from its Sofinnova Capital VIII fund, which held a final close in December 2015 on €300m, exceeding its €250m target.
Previous funding
Sofinnova, alongside MD Start, led a €2.1m seed round for SafeHeal in 2015.
Company
Based in Paris and founded in 2015 by MD Start, a medtech accelerator backed by Sofinnova, SafeHeal has developed a digestive anastomosis protection device named Colovac, designed to reduce complications and obviate the need for ostomies for colectomy patients. The device consists of a reversible implant that remains in place until the body's natural healing and tissue repair process completes, for approximately two weeks, after which it is removed. The company employs six people and plans to target the European and North American markets.
