Nordic and European fundraising down in 2007
Both European and Nordic fundraising were down in 2007. The value of Nordic funds announced and closed went down from a record-high activity in 2006 of EUR10bn to nearly being halved in 2007 to EUR5.1bn, according to figures from unquote".
The number of funds being announced went up, while closed funds saw a slight downturn from 25 to 22 in 2006 and 2007 respectively. However, from 2005 to 2006, raised capital increased four-fold from EUR2.5bn to EUR10bn. The same trend can be seen in Europe.
After a massive drop in 2003 and 2004 from the fundraising heyday of the beginning of the millennium where 170 funds were closed, 2006 was the year that broke all records. Even if 135 funds were closed, in contrast with 170 in 2000, total raised capital amounted to a staggering EUR65bn, up from EUR49bn in 2005. The activity in 2007 remained buoyant, but raised funds were down to EUR64bn in 137 completed funds.
If the current stand-still of mega-buyouts continues, there is likely to be a sharp decline in capital raised this year.
