Claudio Aguirre Pemán has been appointed as vice-president of Mercapital. The firm will benefit from his investment banking experience at Merrill Lynch as he focuses on identifying sectors and companies for investment, as well as supporting strategic decision-making in the funds advised by Mercapital. Aguirre commented: 'I am very happy to be collaborating with this superb team which has led the private equity investment sector for years. During my spell at Merrill Lynch, I had the chance to work with Mercapital on its fundraising as well as on several flotations led by the firm, such as Barón de Ley and Mecalux, where I saw their great professionalism and deep business knowledge.' Aguirre's appointment means that the vicepresidency of the firm is now jointly held by himself, Javier Benjumea Cabeza De Vaca and Manuel Soto Serrano. His contribution will be key over the next few years in a sector of increasing opportunities in our country.'Aguirre began his professional career at Chase Manhattan Bank in London, where he became director general of the bank's Spanish operations in 1986. A year later, he joined Goldman Sachs as head of business banking for Spain and Portugal. Claudio Aguirre then joined Merrill Lynch in 1994, becoming president of Merrill Lynch España and head of the firm's investment banking division for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He also founded the first Spanish fund-of-funds group, Altmar Private Equity, in 2004, and is executive president of the firm.
