Supermercados El Ãrbol
The supermarket chain Supermercados El Ãrbol, which was acquired in October 2002 by CVC Capital Partners (October 2002, page 22) has embarked upon a new drive to consolidate its presence in the sector. The buyout cleared the group’s debts of €128m. As part of a re-evaluation of the company’s position, the new management subsequently disposed of 190 stores with 1,800 employees. Over 120 establishments were sold off to competitor firms such as the chain DÃa, whilst 70 further stores were closed down. The rationalisation of the workforce entailed 300 redundancies, with others were relocated to other positions. The new group has a network of 400 stores spread throughout nine of Spain’s autonomous regions, with a particularly strong presence in Castilla-León, Cantabria and Asturias. El Ãrbol’s objective is to continue with its strategy of operating medium-sized supermarkets which offer consumers a balance between quality, price and personal service.
