Lovells
Lovells is strengthening its Spanish practice with the appointment of Miguel Ãngel Sánchez, former director general of taxation, and Alfonso Padilla, until recently deputy director general of tax policy. Both joined on 2 November and will be based in Madrid. The appointments are in line with Lovell's plans for its Spanish practice, which envisage a business law service with transactional expertise at its core, complemented by expertise in a number of important related areas. Led by Miguel Ãngel Sánchez, the firm's tax practice in Spain will provide a 'stand-alone' service to clients who require specialist tax expertise, as well as tax advice on domestic and cross border deals on which Lovells is instructed. It will focus especially on advice on private equity transactions, finance, international tax planning and family-owned companies.Miguel Ãngel Sánchez was named director general of taxation in 2001 and was responsible for the reform of personal income tax, corporate income tax, non-residents tax, local taxes and the new general tax law. He was also head of the cabinet office of the former Minister of Economy and Inland Revenue. Alfonso Padilla, until recently deputy general director of tax policy, has represented Spain before international organisations in tax matters and has actively participated in the negotiation of community directives, including the parent-subsidiary directive and the merger directive.
