Grupo Calvo
Grupo Calvo has been recognised as best Spanish food company, having been awarded the ‘Mejor Empresa Alimentaria Espanola†prize by the Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación. The prize was given in recognition of Calvo’s achievements in the field of research and development over the last few years, in which it has invested € EUR 6m in development products including low-salt sardines and tuna. Grupo Calvo was founded in 1947 in Carballo, La Coruna, and is a leading player in the tinned tuna markets in Spain, Italy and Portugal. The firm recently opened a new tuna processing plant located in El Salvador, which has the capacity to process 70,000 tonnes of tuna per annum. A consortium of savings banks recently led a capital injection into the group (October 2003, Page 12).
