PE activity will double in Spain by 2007
According to a recent report by the Barcelona-based private equity firm Catalana d’Iniciatives (CDI), private equity investment in Spain is set to double by 2007. The report shows that the value of private equity transactions recorded up until 30 September this year has reached €1.261bn, whilst the figure predicted for 2007 is €2.73bn, based on sector growth in other European countries, in particular, the UK. The hypothesis behind the CDI report is that the percentage of private equity transactions relative to the Spain’s GDP will gradually rise to meet the European average. In 2002, Spain invested 0.14% of its GDP in private equity, whilst the European average was 0.28%, with the UK leading on 0.63%. The report estimates that by 2007, Spain will be investing 0.30% of its GDP in the asset class, with the UK on 0.80%.
