Portugal’s Galp Energia fuels interest from Carlyle
The Carlyle Group has expressed an interest in acquiring a stake of between 33.4% and 45% in the public Portuguese petrol company, Galp Energia. The stake, which is being contested by several consortia, is though to be worth some €700m. Galp Energia controls 38% of the Portuguese petrol market, and aims to establish a strong presence within Spain itself. The other members of the Carlyle consortium include the Portuguese banking group Grupo Espirito Santo and several Portuguese businessmen. The second consortium is made up of the family holding company, José de Mello, private bank, Millennium BCP, and Viacer, which is a majority shareholder in the Superbock drinks group.
