Euromed Capital Forum held in Lyon
Some 300 participants from 22 countries attended the first ever Euro-Mediterranean private equity forum held in Lyon on 26 and 27 May. Following an inaugural speech by the mayor of Lyon, Gérard Collomb, members of the international community gave speeches and workshops aimed at increasing the understanding of the private equity prospects in the countries around the Mediterranean area. The conference focused on Cyprus, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Monaco and Portugal from the European Union, as well as 11 countries or territories on the southern and eastern shores of the Mediterranean basin. This so-called MEDA region included Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and the Palestinian Authority. Aside from France, Tunisia had the largest number of delegates. This is hardly surprising, considering that it constitutes one of the most developed private equity markets in the MEDA zone. Philippe de Fontaine-Vive Curtaz, vice-chairman of the European Investment Bank, was delighted that the event was organised as it underlined the importance of private equity in furthering the development of private businesses. He announced the immediate provision of E150m for private companies benefiting from private equity funds-of-funds based in the MEDA zone.
