Riva y Garcia launches healthcare start-up fund
Spanish fund manager Riva y Garcia and a Barcelona-based medical school have announced plans to establish a private equity vehicle dedicated to healthcare start-ups.
The venture capital firm and the Official Medical College of Barcelona (COMB) have joined forces to launch Healthequity, which will provide funding to entrepreneurial projects in the medical services and biotechnology segments. The fund, which has a target of €15-20m, was unveiled by the Catalonian Generalitat's Andreu Mas-Colell, Minister of Economy and Knowledge, and Boi Ruiz i Garcia, Minister of Health this week.
Healthequity has already received a €4m contribution from the Institut Català de Finances (ICF) in addition to support from pharmaceutical companies Abott Laboratories Grupo Ferrer and Esteve.
