Italy and Spain: driven by different forces
The year to date shows that the Spanish and Italian markets are weathering the current economic situation quite differently. According to unquote's Private Equity Insight, the number of deals recorded at the buyout and expansion level showed Spain had made 51 deals to Italy's 69.
However, the split is significantly different in both markets: In Spain expansion deals represent 69% of the deals, while they comprised just 25% in Italy. In contrast, Italy clocked up 52 buyouts while only 16 such deals took place in Spain. Italy however appears to lead in investment volume in both instances. Nevertheless, the figures may be skewed by the EUR1.1bn Wind Invesment expansion deal.
