Video: Arle's John Arney on the European buyout market
John Arney of Arle Capital Partners discusses the findings of the latest unquote" Private Equity Barometer with Greg Gille.
Private equity activity remained subdued in the first half of the year, with buyout dealflow in particular falling by a third compared to the same period last year. "I think the issues are familiar ones," noted Arney. "We have a depressed banking market and a very volatile macroeconomy. Add those two factors together and you have a hard time financing private equity deals and finding firm ground on which to base your investment cases."
Although he highlighted more positive trends – with the DACH region in particular having enjoyed an uptick in activity in Q2 – Arney warned of the tough odds stacked up against a marked recovery later in the year: "2012 is looking like a game of one half, with more of the same in the coming months. I'm afraid we'll continue seeing low levels of activity."
