SWEDEN - Chalmers supports SEK 3.5m Smoltek funding
Swedish seed investor Chalmers Innovation has, alongside existing backers, backed nanotechnology business Smoltek with an investment of SEK 3.5m.
The main challenge for the semiconductor industry is to reduce the size of semiconductor components. As these gets smaller, however, the copper interconnects transferring data in and out of the microprocessors are reaching their physical limits. To combat this problem, carbon nanostructures with can be used instead of copper, though the challenge then is to integrate such materials into existing electronic circuits by making it CMOS-compatible, and to control the properties of carbon materials in terms of reproducibility and reliability.
Smoltek has developed a technology that enables integration of carbon nanostructures into CMOS and post-CMOS technologies for enhancing performance of existing silicon circuits/microprocessors. The recent capital injection will finance the production of prototypes.
