GERMANY - Candover and Cinven to divest Springer
According to reports, Candover and Cinven have appointed UBS and Goldman Sachs to approach potential buyers for publisher Springer Science and Business Media, in a deal that could fetch up to £2bn.
Springer was established in its current form in 2003 when the two buyout houses merged Kluwer Academic and BertelsmannSpringer. Dutch academic publisher Kluwer was acquired in January 2003 for around EUR 600m, while Berlin-headquartered BertelsmannSpringer, which specialises in trade and scientific literature, was purchased in October of that year for around EUR 1.25bn.
The company reported a turnover of EUR 880m in 2008.
