University and college spinouts make a timid rebound
The funding of Arvia, a spinout from the University of Manchester's School of Chemical Engineering, by MTI Partners for £3.8m is the latest of nine university spinouts noted since the year started.
Time will tell whether this spurt in quarterly deal activity will help increase numbers year-on-year, but there has been a clear downward trend since 2008, from 75 deals recorded then to just 35 in 2011.
While there are a number of exceptional university research centres in Europe, the need to enhance technology transfer, i.e. the process of transformation of the results of research and development (R&D) into marketable products or services remains essential.
Although cooperation between public and private investors is seen in this market, work remains to be done to enhance R&D investments, facilitate proof of concepts, and tackle IP rights issues more proactively.
