Waterland's Median Kliniken bolts on Eschenburg, Rhein-Reha
Waterland portfolio company Median Kliniken has acquired rehabilitiation clinic Klinik Eschenburg and ambulatory rehabilitation centre Rhein-Reha.
These transactions mark the 20th and 21st bolt-on acquisitions for Median in its buy-and-build strategy since Waterland's first investment in 2011. Following this deal, Median operates 120 clinics and facilities with 18,500 beds, treating more than 230,000 patients annually.
Rhein-Reha's entire hospital operations will be integrated into Median's existing Outpatient Health Center at the beginning of 2020.
Waterland acquired the Median brand from Advent International and Marcol Healthcare in October 2014 in a deal valued at around €1bn. It then sold the real estate for €705m and agreed to lease it back from Medical Properties Trust.
The GP then merged the company with its previous competitor, RHM Group, which it had owned since May 2011, to create a new company that operated 72 clinics with 12,000 beds and 9,500 employees.
Company
Founded in 1989, Klinik Eschenburg offers treatments for drug and alcohol addiction with a focus on geriatrics. Based in Eschenburg, the clinic operates three outpatient facilities in Dillenburg, Wetzlar and Gießen.
Düsseldorf-based ambulatory cardiological rehabilitation centre Rhein-Reha was founded in 1990. The catchment area of the company's rehabilitation centre includes the greater Düsseldorf area, Ratingen, Mettmann, Neuss, Dormagen and Duisburg Süd.
