Passion Capital and OATV join $4m OpenSignal series-A
Passion Capital, O’Reilly Alphatech Ventures (OATV) and Qualcomm Ventures have taken part in a $4m series-A round for current portfolio company OpenSignal, a London-based provider of crowdsourced wireless network data.
OpenSignal plans to use the capital to expand its team and move towards creating a crowdsourced sensor network in anticipation of future developments within the mobile technology industry.
The company aims to exploit emerging sensor technology on mobile devices, which it says will soon be able to register factors such as air quality, radiation and 3D vision mapping.
The investors stated they were attracted to the deal by the potential for growth in crowdsourced sensor networks.
Previous funding
Passion Capital, OATV and Qualcomm took part in a $1.3m seed round for OpenSignal in August 2012.
Company
Founded in 2010 and based in London, OpenSignal enables users of its apps to measure network quality across wireless, 4G and 3G services. The company then provides this data to network operators worldwide.
OpenSignal, which is currently trialling a network for measuring weather conditions, plans to develop into a broader crowdsourced sensor network for factors such as air quality and radiation levels.
