
Tiger Global leads USD 175m round for Contentful
Tiger Global has led a USD 175m funding round for mobile application developer Contentful; the Series F round gives the company a valuation of more than USD 3bn.
New investors Base10 Advancement Initiative and Tidemark also took part in the round, alongside Contentful's existing backers.
Contentful intends to use the fresh capital to expand the global footprint of its marketing and sales operation. In addition, the company will invest in product development.
Contentful simultaneously announced the appointment of industry experts Elena Donio and Fred Ball as independent board members.
Reuters reported in May 2021 that Contentful intends to consider its options for listing by the end of 2021, including a USD 5bn IPO.
Large funding rounds have driven aggregate venture and growth activity value to a record level in H1 2021, as reported by Unquote. This year also looks set to become a record year for PE- and VC-backed IPOs in Europe, as reported.
Previous funding
Balderton Capital backed a seed round for Contentful in August 2012, The VC backed a second round of funding in June 2013, joined by Point Nine Capital.
Point Nine and Balderton both backed a EUR 11.63m round for Contentful in May 2016, with participation from Benchmark Capital and Trinity Venture Capital.
General Catalyst led a USD 28m Series C funding round for Contentful in December 2017, joined by the company's existing investors. The company intended to use the fresh capital to increase its headcount from 95 to 145 staff.
In December 2018, Sapphire Ventures led a USD 33.5m Series D round for Contentful. Also participating in the round were Omers Private Equity, Salesforce Ventures and the company's existing investors.
Sapphire Ventures, Salesforce Ventures and General Catalyst led a USD 80m round for Contentful in June 2020, joined by the firm's existing investors. The company was valued at USD 1bn at the time.
