Point Nine injects $1.8m into Kitchen Stories
Point Nine Capital has led a $1.8m seed funding round for mobile cooking app Kitchen Stories alongside Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments (BDMI).
Several business angels also invested in the round. Point Nine drew equity from its second fund, a €40m vehicle which closed in February 2013.
The fresh capital will be used to grow the Kitchen Stories team, expand the company internationally and to launch an Android app. In 2015, the company plans to launch an online community where users can share their own recipes.
Point Nine had been looking into several food apps and was introduced to the Kitchen Stories team by a serial entrepreneur. In November 2013, the VC co-led a €4m series-A for recipe kit service Marley Spoon, with which it sees the potential for synergies with Kitchen Stories. It has also invested in food delivery platform Delivery Hero.
Company
Launched in February 2014, Berlin-based Kitchen Stories offers demonstration videos and step-by-step photo instructions of recipes via an iPad and iPhone app. It also includes a shopping list, timer and measurement converter.
Kitchen Stories claims it has been downloaded more than three million times on iOS devices in 150 countries. The app has been localised in 12 languages, including German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Chinese. It has 20 employees.
